PURPOSE: Encourage parent involvement in children's education, especially as they move through middle & high school-a crucial developmental asset.
¨ Caring, supportive relationships are vital to children-parent involvement in education help young people feel supported.
¨ Kids need to develop a lifelong commitment to learning-parents help develop this commitment.
¨ Parents need to be involved and supportive of their children-parent networks at their children's school help parents make connections and be involved.
In the Greater Green Bay Area, 65% of the students feel their family life provides high levels of love and support, but only 26% feel their parents are actively involved in helping them succeed in school. Consequently, one of the goals of the Partners in Education program is to encourage parent involvement in children's education with support from parent networks and workplaces.
To start each school year and to send this message to all parents, Partners in Education sponsors a Parent Pep Rally. The rally is a high-energy event-cheering for parents and emphasizing the importance of parent involvement and the positive results of parents working with the schools. This year the rally will also build on the issue of school attendance and the ways our community can work together to get our children to school and keep them in school.
The October 12 Parent Pep Rally hosted by West De Pere High School will begin with registration for door prizes and cash awards from 6:30-7:00 p.m. Parent networks with the highest percentage of parents attending receive cash awards for their community work and individual attendees are eligible for door prizes of family weekend getaway packages.
The rally is 7-8 p.m. with cheerleaders, dance teams, pep band, and "celebrity" dancers (school administrators). Addressing the rally will be special guest, state superintendent of schools, Elizabeth Burmaster.
Please help us encourage attendance at this event and spread the word about parent involvement and school attendance throughout the community. For more details about the event and/or the message, please call Nancy Schopf at 437-8704.
