Green Bay, Wis.- (Aug. 20, 2008) – Applications for MoneySmart Kids 2008 for the Green Bay Area are being accepted from 6th-8th graders and 9th-12th graders who attend a public and private school in the Partners in Education School Districts—Ashwaubenon, Denmark, De Pere, Green Bay, Howard-Suamico, Luxemburg-Casco, Pulaski, Seymour, West De Pere, Wrightstown—until Sept. 26.
Money Smart Week Wisconsin is a creation of the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Governor Jim Doyle created the Council; First Lady Jessica Doyle is its honorary chair. Oct. 12-18 will be the third annual statewide financial literacy campaign, first of its kind in the nation, and second year for the Green Bay Area. Money Smart Week is based on an idea created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago with the goal of helping families, students, homeowners, businesspersons, employees and other community members expand their opportunities through financial literacy. The week is set up to provide workshops, seminars, programs, events and other activities aimed at improving financial literacy.
Various businesses and agencies in the Greater Green Bay Area are involved in planning the activities for this area. Partner organizations in the Greater Green Bay Area are sponsoring the MoneySmart Kid Essay Contest. Students in grades 6-8 and grades 9-12 (2008-09 school year) from a Partners in Education public or private school are encouraged to enter by answering the Money Smart question with an essay of 300 words or less. Finalists will be selected to attend the Money Smart Week Kickoff Event on Oct. 14 and one student in each age category will be named this year’s MoneySmart Kid, winning a $500 scholarship sponsored by UWGB SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) and the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions. Other finalists will receive a $50 savings bond sponsored by Green Bay Area Partners in Education.

Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 26, finalists will be interviewed by Oct. 9 and MoneySmart Kids will be introduced at Oct. 14 kickoff event.
