FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Green Bay, Wis.¬- (Sept. 4, 2008)- The Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 2008 ATHENA Award recipient – Barbara Nick, senior vice president of energy delivery and customer service, Wisconsin Public Service Corporation. Nick is also the president of Upper Peninsula Power Company.
As one of the highly visible women in the energy industry, Nick is a model for professional women in all fields.
Nick began her career at WPS in 1981 as a job analyst and escalated through the ranks at the corporation. She serves on the Wisconsin Public Utility Institute Executive Board and is an active participant in the Energy Center of Wisconsin. She serves on the Power Delivery & Energy Utilization Sector Council for the Electric Power Research Institute and was on the institute’s council on energy efficiency. Nick has also represented WPS on the Technical Advisory Council and Strategic Issues Committee of the Edison Electric Institute.
Nick shows her support for professional women by serving as a role model for women and young girls – she spends a lot of time working with them at the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay where she serves on the board of directors and is the chair of the personnel committee. She also shows her support of women in the workplace through various presentations to women in business organizations and high school students.
Nick is a member of TEMPO International and serves on the Resource Development Committee for Libertas. Tempo was formed by a small group of Milwaukee businesswomen for support while seeking to penetrate their own local glass ceiling. Today, TEMPO chapters exist in numerous communities.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Barbara and know she is a very deserving recipient of the ATHENA Award,” noted Paul Jadin, president of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. “She is a great representative of ATHENA ideals.”
"Barb demonstrates the ideals of the goddess Athena, through her wisdom as a professional and as a committed member of the community,” said Karmen Lemke, manager of community relations at Wisconsin Public Service. "One of her many value-adds on top of everything is role modeling - she gets in front of young people and tells them if they make good choices, stay focused and work hard good things can happen - she has credibility and kids listen."
Award sponsor Schenck Business Solutions and 2007 ATHENA recipient, Eileen Littig, will present the award to Nick at the Chamber’s annual meeting on Monday, Oct. 20.
Each year, the ATHENA Award is given to a deserving man and woman who is a member of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce or employed by a member firm. The recipient must display outstanding commitment to their profession, to the advancement of women and to serving their community.
